La Pierre Le Bigaut 2002

Twelve of us, along with 2000 other competitors took part in the 2002 Jean François Rault randonnée, ten on the 100 mile and two on the 60 mile course. A fantastic time was had by all throughout the weekend and Helen Goulding managed to bring back a trophy for third in her category. This was presented by Mike Stevenson (our man in Bretagne) on the post ride dinner.


Despite threatening skies, the sun came out and we all set off on a warm and dry morning. Good progress was made and we were in a strong group of about 50 riders covering some small but testing climbs along the north Britany coast line. The scenery was breathtaking (likewise the climbs).

The first feed station was at about 30 miles and those with weak bladders requested a stop.

Rab York made the mistake of taking his eye off the road and while he was tucking into a well deserved quarter of orange, the team (using an Eddy Merckx tactic) decided to attack at the feedstation. That said, the accordian music was enough to make anyone get out of the saddle and sprint away.

Peter Hubert had made a lone break from the off and was by now well on his way to finishing in about five hours. The remainder were working as domestiques for Helen Goulding.

A series of five punctures and one bent wheel caused Sam Goulding to climb off after 65 miles and Rab York after 73 miles. Everyone else finished strongly in a time of about five and three-quarter hours. Torty Hubert (encouraged by the 'rear' of a tandem) beat Brian Ovenden in the sixty mile event.

Thanks to Mike Stevenson and his wife Yvonne for all their help on this and all our trips to Britany. Despite all his hard work in organising the event from Jersey, John Gage was ill and missed the event taking part only in the après-cycle.

Next event is the Pierre Le Bigaut. There are ten already going and if you're interested get in touch with Brian Ovenden who's trying to fill another car.
