Sorel Point was the venue for the most recent Under 12 mountain bike race, a course which looks relatively flat but includes a number of small but frequent lumps for the riders to climb over. A large turn out in each event ensured that from the starting whistle, competition to get to the first corner was fast, giving those who made it a good advantage over everyone else. The racing season is now just over half way through for the youngsters with 4 out of 7 races complete. Riders score points from each event and their 6 best scores count towards the final, overall positions. In the 5 years and under category, Sammy Kermin took the lead from the start and consolidated his overall first place with yet another win. Jack Clayden tried hard to catch him but was unsuccessful and finished the race in second place with Olivia Pollard in third. Four year old Indi Malzard, enjoyed bits of her first event and demonstrates how available this sport is to all ages. Matthew Rayson returned to the 6/7 year event, having missed the last race and set out to score maximum points. The whole group started very quickly and soon 6 riders had established a lead from the rest of the field. In the early laps of the race, Rayson, Samuel Allen and Harry Garnham jostled for the lead, which was eventually won and retained by Rayson. Garnham took second place by the end of the second lap and held this to the finish, whilst Michael Milner rode a steady race to finish in third place. Garnham, Milner and Rayson currently head the overall table for their age group, with only 14 points separating all three of them. Riders in the 7 and 8 year old class strung themselves out with Joshua O’Donoghue and Harry Cochrane winning the head of the line. O’Donoghue lead for most of the first lap, but had been overtaken by Cochrane by the time they reached the line. By mid way through the race, Cochrane had widened the gap and it stayed this way until the final whistle. O’Donoghue took second place and currently leads the overall class points from George Milner who finished this race in third place. Competition in the 10 and 11 year old class is certainly fierce and the large filed of riders had to struggle to achieve a clear racing line through the first few corners of the course. In the early laps of the race, a group of 7 riders stayed in close contention with each other and it was James Gibaut who crossed the line ahead of the others at the end of the first lap. However, Samuel Coutanche, Rikki Knowlton and Kurt Dingle continue their own battle for the overall title and soon overtook Gibaut to claim the first three positions in the race. The mid field riders also stayed together for much of the race and received much encouragement from parents around the course. Knowlton currently leads the overall table by 10 points from Coutanche in second and 14 points from Dingle in third. The series is sponsored by Vittel and Mark Pickford’s Cycle Shop and the next event is on Sunday 6 February 2005 at Val de la Mare. 5 AND UNDER CLASS 6/7 YEARS OLD CLASS 8/9 YEARS OLD CLASS 10/11 YEARS OLD CLASS |
