The sixth race of the Mark Pickford Mountain Bike Winter Series took place in cold damp conditions at Sion, St. John. This is generally considered the best but most demanding course of the series with its mix of sharp climbs, fast muddy descents and stream crossings. Following a period of heavy rain the course was heavy going but had managed to dry a little overnight. A blistering start saw a mix of riders start strongly over an open field before a sharp right and left into a technical descent. Kieron Mills, Michael Boarer and super veteran Simon Slaffer all had great starts and lead the field for the first half a lap. Kieron had the bit firmly between his teeth and was almost thirty seconds ahead by lap two. Behind, bad starts and technical problems left Robin Ovenden and Guernsey Commonwealth Games competitor Rob Smart work to do. By lap three Smart had managed to pass Robin and Kieron and was forcing a strong pace lap after lap. By the final whistle and after 1 hour and 20 minutes of racing Rob Smart took yet another comfortable win from Kieron and Robin. The Sports Class saw relative newcomer Adam Wojtkiewicz take another fine win, with ‘one to watch’ Rhys Hidrio taking a best ever second place. Lee Wells proved that his Sunday morning training was paying off with a well deserved third sport. The Veteran’s class saw Michael Boarer make an absolute flyer from the start and was untouchable the entire race. Watch out Bruce Dingle. Jim Leatt fought hard but struggled in the wet conditions with only one brake. Third place went to the ever consistent Pete Dingle. The Women’s Class was a one horse race, won with a brave ride from Caroline Davis. The Schoolboy’s Class was a case of sibling rivalry with Robert Coutanche managing to get the better of his brother Samuel. The seventh and final race of the Mark Pickford Winter Series will start at 9am on Sunday 19th March at Mont Rossignol, St. Ouen. Please see the club website (www.ccc.je) for further information.
