Kindly sponsored by Race 4, Mont Rossignol, 3 February 2008
The fourth Cycle Centre sponsored, CCC Mountain Bike Winter Series event took place at the Mont Rossignol course, with rather cold weather attracting a slightly lower than normal turnout. The course, always a favourite with the riders was a good all round test with off camber descents, technical rock sections, challenging climbs and energy sapping grass sections. In the Elite class, Robin Ovenden, Kieron Mills and Rhys Hidrio set off across a heavy going grass field and had soon opened a gap between themselves and the following riders. It wasn't long however, before Ovenden started putting the hammer down and set a punishing pace that Mills and Hidrio couldn't match. Whilst considering his response, Mills then suffered a puncture and the time lost getting back to the pits for repair meant his race was over. Ovenden powered on to take a deserved victory, with Hidrio 2 nd and Krzysztof Jeromkin, pedalling hard in 3 rd . In the sport class, Erik Le Brun had a great start and immediately found himself in the group following the elite riders. He remained calm and on lap three pulled away and rode solidly to record his second victory of the season and 3 rd place overall, an excellent result. Graham Horsley put in one of his best performances for 2 nd and Lee Wells, who was in close attendance but unable to mount a charge, had to settle for 3rd. The Sport class championship is shaping up to be a great contest between these three riders. In the Veterans class, Bruce Dingle, Simon Stead and Michael Boarer were keen to score well and it looked as if Dingle was going to take his second win of the season until a puncture slowed him down on lap 5. Stead close behind, was able to seize the advantage and took the lead and though Dingle fought back after a quick wheel change, in the end Stead conjured up enough energy to pull clear for his first victory of the season. Boarer wasn't at the races for this event and had to settle for 3 rd and Colin Malzard worked hard to take 4 th place ahead of Pete Dingle. In the Ladies, Helene Monpetit was clear winner from Lynda Lutz in 2 nd . In the Super-Vets and Schoolboys classes lone entrants Chaz Knight, with a 15 th place overall and Rory Hidrio were class winners respectively. The club extends its grateful thanks to Lyndon Farnham for use of the land and to all the club members who assisted with the course preparation. The next race is on March 2 nd .
