During a warm and often sunny Easter weekend, a total of 59 riders
took part in the Caesarean Cycling Club's Mapei Norman's Easter Stage
Race. The five handicapped events held in the west of the island gave
the less dominant local riders a chance to complete on a more level
playing field with islands best. It also gave the elite riders a greater
challenge.
The first event, a short hard ride from the Watersplash to the top of
Jubilee Hill, saw Chris Spence head the General Classification with
veteran Mike Harris only seven seconds behind. Stage two involved ascending
Jubilee Hill a further four times in a 30 mile road race, won by Kevin
Harding from Tony Richomme whose combined points gave Richomme the overall
lead. Richomme held this place following the 25km time trial and circuit
races at Les Quennevais. Going into the final event, a 50 mile road
race on the Bal Tabarin circuit, Richomme led Spence by only 4 points.
In spite of Spence's best efforts, Richomme finished ahead but the overall
result was based on the best four from five events. Richomme having
not had a placing lower than sixth had to concede victory to Spence
by a single point. Spence's three victories in stages one, three and
four sealing a deserved win. Richomme was a clear second and first veteran.
Melissa Messervy was best lady beating Amanda Le Verdier and Helen Goulding
into joint second place. Richard Tanguy competing well with a fourth
place in the final event was best junior. The Caesarean Cycling Club
would like to thank Mapei and Normans Ltd for their generous support
for this event. The club is grateful for the co-operation and assistance
of the western parishes during this event.
Thank you to Mapei and Normans for sponsoring
this event.
