Clean sweep for Gage
Caesarean Cycling Club's Paul Gage continued his dominance of the evening 5mile time trial series, which ended this Tuesday, with another blistering ride of sub 11 minutes in windy conditions - making it four wins out of four.
Gage, who is returning to the saddle this season after some time away from competitive cycling, has dominated the evening 5mile time trial series, organised by CCC, with a string of convincing victories. His ride on Tuesday evening, held in blustery conditions where a strong NE headwind made the first leg of the course along the Five Mile Road from La Saline difficult, was the only one that was under 11 minutes.
The fastest ride of the 2008 series by Paul Gage - completed in 10:42 - is still some 20 seconds short of the course record, set by Commonwealth Games rider and CCC clubmate Sam Firby in 2006. But Gage's string of recent victories make him strong favourite to take Jersey Cycling Association 5mile time trial, which is to be held on Sunday, and is the last competitive bike race of the season in Jersey.
The hotly contested veteran's class was won by Velo Sport's Mark Nish, in 11:22, making it his second win of the four races. Caesarean's Kevin Pilley claimed second, coming in five seconds later, with VSJ's Stephen King taking third in a time of 11:33. Nish, who has been time-trialling superbly all season, has a strong chance of winning the JCA event, in the veteran's class, on Sunday, but will be pushed hard by clubmate Stephen King, who has twice produced the fastest vets time over five miles this season, at 11:08, and, like Nish, has won two of the four races in the 5m TT series.
Jemima (Jim) Davis, of Velo Sport Jersey, claimed her second win of the series, coming in at 13:01, with VSJ's Stephen Haley holding off the competitive challenge of his clubmate, Sam Carney, in the junior's class, to make it two wins apiece, with a time of 12:47.
The JCA 5mile time trial is at 8.30am on Sunday 28 September, starting from La Saline, on the Five Mile Road. [KP]
