Ovenden wins in style - but record remains

Caesarean Cycling Club's Robin Ovenden continued his superb season with a fine victory in the Jersey Cycling Association Five Mile Time Trial Championship, taking the field by storm, in a ride of 10 minutes and 28 seconds - just six seconds off the course record.

Potential Commonwealth Games contender, Ovenden blew the field apart with a margin of over 30 seconds, to take the JCA 5 mile Time Trial Championship on Sunday morning. Ovenden's victory, in a stunning time of 10:28, sees him add the 5mile JCA TT title to his 10mile and 25 mile JCA Time Trial titles for 2009. Despite perfectly calm conditions, he was just unable to eclipse clubmate Sam Firby's record of 10:22, set over the same course along the Five Mile Road.

CCC's Paul Millar was second, setting a personal best in breaking the 11 minute barrier for a 5mile TT, with a time 10:59. This cap a fine season for Millar, in which he has also broken the hour barrier for a 25 mile TT. The Caesarean Cycling Club made it a clean sweep in the senior's event, with Adam Wojtkiewicz taking bronze.

In the hotly contested veteran's class, seasoned CCC vet Mike Harris upset recent form books with a superb time of 11:07 to claim the JCA 5mile TT title - adding to the 10 mile TT JCA title that he took in equally impressive style at the beginning of the season. A seasoned campaigner never to be underestimated, Harris was a full 12 seconds of the next best placed veteran, VSJ's Bill Buist, who produced a fine ride to take silver, just one second ahead of CCC vet Kevin Pilley, who rode strongly to take bronze, in a time of 11:20.

CCC's Sarah Henderson continues her impressive return to competitive cycling to take victory in the ladies class in a time of 12:43, just two seconds ahead of VSJ challenger, Susan Williams, with VSJ's Jo Le Cocq back in bronze spot in a time of 12:53.

With just one more race to go for the Jersey 2009 road racing season, Robin Ovenden has one more chance to break a longstanding record - the two minute barrier for the Bouley Bay Hill Climb, set by CCC's Tony Cornic in 1980. The Jersey Cycling Association's Hill Climb Championship is at Bouley Bay on Sunday 04 October, starting at 0830.
