The Hard Way to Amsterdam
Commiseration to Paul Le Gros who was part of the team attempting to set a record by rowing from London to Amsterdam. The attempt had to be called off after 99 miles because bad weather was causing dangerous sea conditions.

Children’s Mountain Biking
After a delay due to foot and mouth restrictions, the children’s MTB series was finally completed. As usual a big thank you goes to Colin and Lynda Hidrio for organizing the events which were enjoyed by over ninety riders. Colin & Lynda have started the planing for the next series, and will be arranging a informal afternoon of racing when he hopes to be able to discus the benefits of club membership. Membership fees for U12's is £5.

Paddle Power at its Best
Congratulations to our MTB boys who annihilated all the competition in the Dragon Boat Race by winning all their heats and, of course, the final.

Miere Frames
Any rider looking for a new frame should consider consulting Rob Miere. Rob has already built a dozen frames for "local stars" so before you splash out on something new for next season why not have a word with Rob. Alternatively if your old frame needs a respray have word with his brother Paul.

Over the Hill

The next time you are struggling up a hill spare a thought for the rider who wrote to a bike publication recently and said "I am 93, I ride a trike and I am finding it increasing difficult to get up the hills. Is there some kind of motor I can put on my machine?"

Knocked Over but not Out

As most people know Brian Ovenden was knocked off his bike on Victoria Avenue. Brian is recovering slowly having suffered damage to his pelvis. He is now back on his bike and making plans for another last season of racing in 2002. With various pins and hip replacement joints one can only say that most of Brian is 69 years old. Good to see you back in the saddle, the whole club wish you a full recovery.

World Triathlon

Congratulations to Andy Kemp in competing in the World Triathlon Championship in Edmonton, Canada. Andy was only called up for the GB team a week before the competition and rose to the occasion to finish 44th in the very strong 35-39 age group. It is worth noting that Tim Rogers also had a call to join the GB team but was unable to do so because of other commitments.

Make a Date
The club dinner and prize presentations will take place on Saturday 17th November at Les Mielles Golf Club. No speeches, just good food and good company. JCA medal winners will be assisted in spending their prize money at the bar! Tickets available from members of the committee, priced £14.

Café Society
Overheard at the café one Saturday: "I have had trouble this morning with swirling wind." Keep taking the tablets Norman.

Stork Time

Congratulations to John and Hilary Bouteloup on the arrival of a baby girl.

Record Breaker
Bruce Dingle was in fine form recently at the Bouley Bay Hill climb when he lowered his six year old record for the 500cc class on two occasions. Well done Bruce. The challenge now is to repeat the performance at the JCA Hill Climb Championship on the 7th October.

Island Games
All the club’s competitors in the Island Games, namely Steve Greig, Chris Spence, John Bouteloup, Bruce Dingle and Paul Le Gros all turned in good performances. The next Games will be in Guernsey in two years time. Anybody with ambitions to in the team should start building a program of training and UK events to ride. Forward planning and commitment are the key to success.

International Fame

Whilst staying at the top of Alp d’Huez waiting for the stage finish of the Tour de France, Peter Du Val, Liam Catney, Dave Whitt and Steve Goaziou were joined for breakfast by David Duffield of Eurosport commentating fame. Before you had a chance to say "Lance Armstrong", David was fully briefed about the CCC and the Island Games. In true Duffield style he mentioned the CCC and his breakfast companions on two separate occasions during his broadcast.. If that was not enough, our boys had painted on the road a short distance from the finish: JERSEY CCC CCC CCC Perfect for those shots from the helicopter. Top marks for to the boys for publicity.

The Way Forward
More MTB riders are wanting to improve their fitness and realise that mixing their racing with road events, as do all the top internationals, is essential. However, before they commit large sums of money on buying new road bikes, it would be worth investigating second hand machines that road riders may wish to sell. Many road riders will also be able to give advice and guidance about frame sizes, components and setting up a road bike to fit properly. So if anybody wishes to sell a bike then place an advert in the next newsletter. All details to Colin Perry.

E-Mail
If you are not already receiving your newsletter by e-mail and like to do so, please send your e-mail address to cwperry@localdial.com

Without them Nothing would Happen
The road season is nearly at an end and the club would like to say a big thanks you to all the members who have marshaled. A special thank you goes to Dave Whitt who organized the rota and the race organizers, in no particular order: Gordon Wright, Allan Millar, Norman Clayton, Tony Richomme, Torty Hubert, Peter Hubert, Pat Timlin, Brian Ovenden, Dave Whitt and Colin Perry.

WWW Results Service
For those of you who are connected (to the web) you can now get access to this years race results. It was only started part way through the season so it's not entirely comprehensive but most results are available. For those already on the mailing list, getting access is easy if you follow the instructions below. If you're not on the mailing list but would like to be, please contact Sam Goulding or Colin Perry or subscribe directly by sending an email to ccc_jersey-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
Firstly, you need to register with Yahoo and do this by going to website http://groups.yahoo.com/. Follow the instructions - the hardest bit is finding an ID not already used by someone else. You can create a new yahoo email address but it's not necessary and you can keep your existing address by entering this on the form. Once you've got a Yahoo ID you need to link this to the ccc_jersey mailing list. First you need to log into yahoo using your ID. Then go to http://groups.yahoo.com/convwiz and following the instructions - select the "Don't have a password? Forgot your password?" option and enter the email
address you get your ccc mail on. When you enter you email and you'll be shown another page asking for an authorisation code which you'll be sent shortly afterwards by email. Finally, you'll can get the home page on
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ccc_jersey and the rest should be obvious - well as obvious as computers ever are. The results are found under the "Files" option - down the left hand side. Any problems contact ccc_jersey-owner@yahoogroups.com

Opportunities.

Fancy yourself as a track champion [velodrome that is]? During the track program of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, in July 2002, there may be some supporting events. It is likely they will take the form of an omnium between the Home Countries at Under 12, 14 and 16 year level. Jersey may have its own group of riders, or be included as part of a C.I. team Clearly it is early days yet and nothing is definite. If you are interested and within the right age groups, contact Club Secretary, Gordon Wright on 744764 for more information and advice. You will need to gain experience of a fixed wheel bike and also get some track experience too. The nearest banked indoor track is at Calshot, not far from Southampton, where they hold winter track meetings.

Sponsors.
Many thanks to the sponsors who have supported the Club this year. JJ Le Sueur [Amoy Foods & Smirnoff] Bruce Dingle Electrical Contractors, Trinity Tyres LTD, & Allan Miller Architects.

In the News
Congratulations to Chris Spence on getting his name and photograph in Cycling Weekly competing in the Surrey League Revolutions. Not to be out done, Allan Miller was also featured in the results for the Cromarty Firth 25 finishing seventh in a time of 1:04:11.

Rowe’s Roving Rolling French Away Days
Led by Wally Rowe, Ian Cameron and Peter Glendawar enjoyed a day on the bikes in France recently. Going from Gorey they had a full day and inspite of stopping for lunch covered just over 100 miles at an average speed of 15mph. Nothing exceptional I hear you say but Wally is 70, Ian 65 and Peter the youngster of the trio at 55.

Action Required

There have been suggestions of winter training rides in France. So far they have never materialized. All it needs is somebody to take the bull by the horns or the bike by the handlebars and others will follow.

New Members / Membership
Welcome, David Moyse, Jamie Gilson, John Taylor, Kieron Mills & Gary Du Gruchy, to the Caesarean Cycling Club. What ever your interest in cycling we all hope you enjoy your time with the club. It has been noted that a number of riders at the recent mountain bike events are not members of the club. The management committee will insist that all riders become members this season.

MTB Winter Series
The program for the winter series should be available by the end of September. Foot & Mouth restrictions are still in place so courses will be restricted.
