Here's some of what happened in 2002 (click headline for full story)

Don't forget that behind these headlines, your personal triumphs and all the enjoyment (and other sensations) you got in 2002 there were a number of individuals without whom, much of this wouldn't be possible. Throughout the year, these people (and we all know who they are) have organised races, organised clubs runs, managed the club, given their time and experience so that cycle sport in Jersey has so much to offer. Remember this.

Hougue Bie Win 10 March 2002
The CCC's Danny Le Marquand wins the first road race of the season at Hougue Bie.

Club Kit 13 March 2002
New kit for the Road Racing section for 2002 - Samples despatched 12 March and should be here by the weekend of 16/17 March. If so, they'll be on show at Portinfer Café, St. Ouen at 11am Saturday and Sunday. Orders to be taken now.

Chris Spence opens UK road race campaign with top six finish in Essex 10 March 2002

Caesarean Cycling Club's Chris Spence finished sixth in the Jock Wadley Memorial road race held in Essex on Sunday 10 March 2002. The race, on 93 miles of rolling roads, featured a full field of 75 riders braving the cold and windy conditions.

Within the first five miles Chris was one of 14 riders who escaped the bunch and quickly moved away. With the high pace and cross winds, half of the breakaway dropped behind leaving Gordon McCauley, riding for the Belgium Team Flanders to win the race. Chris came home in an excellent sixth place.

The CCC take four out of the top five places as Ali Cann wins the season's first criterium with Tony Richomme taking first Vet and second place.

Chris Spence puts in a great performance in an strong international field

La Hougue Bie Road Race 14 April 2002
Chris Spence and David Jardine of the Caesarean Cycling Club won the Velo Sport Jersey Road Race at La Hougue Bie, in a time of 1 hr 51 min 49 sec. In the Amatori Steve Scotcher and Tony Williams of Velo Sport Jersey came in with a time of 1 hr 37 min. First lady home was Ruth Bonney.

Commonwealth Games Selection (17 April 2002)
Following success in qualifying races Chris Spence has been selected to represent Jersey in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Manchester later this year. Congratulations to Chris!

Spring Series 2002 (4 May 2002)
The first of the handicap Spring Series events is won by Ali Cann

Steve Grieg breaks the 25 mile time trial record. (12 May 2002)
On 12 May 2002, Steve Greig became the fastest Jerseyman ever over 25 miles with a time of 52:45. This gave Steve an overall 5th position in a large field of one hundred and one riders. First home for his second victory of the weekend was Michael Hutchinson in a time of 46:42, getting ever closer to Chris Boardman's nine year old national record of 45:57.

Mike Harris and Colin Perry have success in the UK (3 June 2002)
Mike Harris & Colin Perry competed in two events in the UK on 1 and 2 June 2002. The Frome & District Wheelers 10 on the U369 on Saturday afternoon & fifteen hours later the Wessex Road Club 50 on the P206. Mike completed the 10 in 22:58, giving 4th overall & first Vet. Colin finishing in a time of 24:53, 31 seconds faster then his previous best on this course, to give a top half finish. The winner was Andy Cooper in a time of 22:12. The 50 time for Mike was 1:58:36 to give 5th overall & 2nd Vet to G Longland ex BAR winner. The race was won by Mark Cox of VC St Rapheal in 1:53:53. Colin finishing in a disappointing 2:12:43.

Chris Spence and Tony Richomme dominate in Guernsey (9 June 2002)
Caesarean Cycling Club's Chris Spence and Tony Richomme crossed the water to take part in the annual Jersey-Guernsey road race, this year held in Guernsey. Chris won in a time of 2 hours, 36 minutes and 22 seconds over five laps of the 12 mile Vazon circuit. Chris beat Sarnians Aaron Bailey and Terry Wright in a sprint finish after the three had broken away on lap four. Tony finished well, leading the chasing group across the line two minutes down.

Commonwealth Games Road Race (5 August 2002)
JERSEY cyclist Chris Spence had a superb ride in the men's road race just to finish what was branded a 'nightmare' course at Rivington.

Commonwealth Games Triathlon (5 August 2002)
JAMES AMY was a picture of euphoria at Salford Quays as he strode up the final stretch of the Commonwealth Games triathlon to finish in 21st place.

Mountain Bikers compete in UK (7 August 2002)
Club members James Patterson and Kieron Mills gained vital experience from a recent trip to the UK, competing in the Britich Southern Area Mountainbike Championships. Patterson, racing in the Youth Class overcame tiredness and mechanical failure to finish in a credible 8th place.

Mills, competing in his first race on the mainland, faced a strong field of competitors, but rode well to finish in 20th place. The course was set in Aston Hill Woods, and comprised of challenging desents and steep, long climbs, with many wet roots and sharp rocks to catch riders out.

Surrey Five Day Event (21aug02)
Chris Spence, Ali Cann, Dave Jardine and Paul Allen travelled to the mainland to compete in the Surrey 5 day stage race

Dave Whitt sets off 100 hour Pyrenean challenge

German Ironman (August 2002)
CCC member and 2002 inter-insular triathlon winner Tim Rogers competed in the long-distance IRONMAN triathlon, in Germany in August 2002.

Cancer Relief Charity Ride (8 September 2002)
Twentry CCC riders raise £300+ in the round the island Cancer Relief ride.

Dave Whitt's epic ride across the Pyrénées (12 September 2002)
The Raid Pyrénéan is generally regarded as one of the toughest permanent Randonnées. The challenge is to cycle from Hendaye on the Atlantic Coast to Cerbere on the Mediterranean Coast, a distance of 440 miles, within 100 hours. The route contains eighteen classified cols, many made famous and used regularly by the Tour de France.

2003 Island Games
Next year's Island Games takes place in Guernsey and if you're planning to compete, the time to start training is now.

National Hill Climb Championships, November 2002
Mike Harris travelled to Manchester for his final race of the season to compete in the 59th National Hill Climb held over a long course with a large variation of gradients.
