Chris Spence was in action at the weekend in the Lincoln Grand Prix, close to 200 riders lined up for the start which from the off was chaotic with speeds of 30 plus mph in the neutralised area! Positioning in the Lincoln is key to having a good race and Spence new that he had to hit the first accent of the cobbled climb in the top 20 otherwise it was going to be a difficult day. The run in to the climb was extremely nervous and Spence was positioned in quite a good spot and then a momentary lapse of concentration and a swerve in the bunch and Spence hit the climb close to the back and then just in front of him to really spice things up a rider dropped his chain and came to a sudden stop causing a minor crash on the bottom with him having to clip out of his pedal and wait to get going again. By the time he crested the climb in Lincoln the front group were already 45 secs up the road. A chase for a solid lap saw him rejoin the back of the group on the 2nd accent only to experience the same problems. Spence rode a further two laps but by this time was some minutes down and was subsequently pulled out with the tight time restrictions for riders dropping off the group.
Afterwards, Spence was philosophical and commented: “I was really disappointed with myself as I knew I had to be upfront but just blew it. Things didn’t relax for some laps and my friend and fellow IOM IG rider Andy Roche crashed out on lap 3 with a suspected broken collar bone so I guess I didn’t fair too badly! .”
