Chris Spence, from Jersey's Caesarean Cycling Club, claimed a respectable fourth place finish in the only National B road race being held in the UK at the weekend.

With one of his best results of the season, Spence claimed a fine fourth place finish in a competitive and full field of 80 riders, at the Nick Clark Memorial Road Race. The race, hosted by Kenton Road Club, involved eight laps of a ten mile rolling course with a steep climb just after the start and finish at Cheddington, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, just north of London.

In warm and sunny conditions, everyone was keen to race. The speed of the race was high and, as a result, none of the attempted breaks in the first few laps of the race were being allowed to escape from the main bunch of riders. The first significant move came, however, with four laps remaining, when a successful break - including CCC's Spence - formed and stayed away for a lap and a half.

Almost straight after the break was reeled in a counter attack formed, which turned out to be the race winning move. Spence was again, able to be part of it, and managed to jump across from the main bunch to join the counter-attack. This attack was sustained for the remainder of the race, maintaining a gap back to the chasing bunch which hovered around 40 seconds, with all the riders in the break working hard to stay away.

In the sprint for the win, Spence jumped a little too early and was passed just before the line, but managed to hold on to a respectable fourth place. [CS, KP]
