In form CCC rider Chris Spence was in action again in August racing the National B Python Racing Team Summer Road Race. The event on the day attracted another full field with some of the country's regular Premier Calendar riders choosing to ride.
The event was held on the fast rolling Fifield circuit with riders completing 10 laps to cover 88 miles. First to attack was Jersey visitor Will Bjerfelt riding for the sports beans team who had fielded a full team. Many attacks were being launched in the first few miles until a move of 8 clipped off relatively early in the first lap with Spence in it. This move hovered in front of the bunch for several laps at only 30 to 40 secs and at one point looked to be coming back. Two riders bridged across one being Wouter Sybrandy of the Sigma sport team who won this year’s East Yorkshire Premier Calendar event. One rider making the most of having team mates trying to bridge up to the break was Grant Bayton of sports beans who sat last man and never did one turn on the front until two laps to go! Oh the luxury of having a team mate! A chase group of 8 got within 30 secs of the break and that was the closest they got, with all but one rider driving the break and riding around the circuit at an average of 27 mph it was always going to be a tall order for the bunch or chase to catch them. With a lap and a half to go Sport Bean rider Grant Bayton attacked the break with his fresh legs and he soon opened up a gap, Spence still feeling relatively good saw an an opportunity to break away from his breakaway companions quickly jumped across, and the two then worked well to open a sizable gap. Grant having what he called "Pressure on him from his team to Win" then left Spence on the front for the last few miles refusing to come through. Turning into the finish straight Spence jumped hard and distanced a surprised Bayton who was unfortunately able to get back on terms and just pass him just before the finish line.
“I felt great today and was on a float day when nothing is difficult, it was a shame that I ended up with Grant at the finish as with his relatively Fresh legs it was always going to be difficult to beat him, but I gave it a good shot! I knew I had good form after the Island Road Champs and it was confirmed today. The surrey 5 day starts Friday and Who knows, perhaps I can go one better than my 1999 overall placing of 2nd!
