CCC rider Chris spence was in action for the first time in 2009 while out training in San Diego. Spence entered both the masters 35+ event held over 50 mins and the Pro 1.2. event held over 70 mins. The annual Red Trolley crit is held in San Diego on a 0.6 mile circuit with a small hill to the finish. In the masters event spence found himself in the break of some 20 plus riders which lapped the main field after 30 minutes. The break then broke into a small lead group of 7 riders with spence being one of them. This group constantly split and regrouped for the last few laps with Spence doing a lot of work closing the gaps, come the sprint he could only manage 5th and could tell that it was his first race of the year and was lacking any real race fitness. He then quickly changed his number and was back on the start line and gone in under 8 minutes and off racing the Pro event. With somewhat tired legs Spence sat securely in the front quarter and followed wheels with the pro race finishing in a bunch sprint and with Spence having no interest or the legs to contest the finish.

A 5th place for his first race of the year was a promising finish and looks good for the 2009 season. Chris Spence will resume his 2009 racing with the Jock Wadley Memorial held over 80 miles on 8th March and will be joined by the club's other Commonwealth Games hopefuls, chris saviour and Adam Wojtkiewicz.
